The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, as she leads the ASO in the suite from Prokofiev's ballet Masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. A work that brings out the full range of virtuoso ensemble, the music moves from bellicose furor to aching poignancy with some white-knuckle violin playing in between. The concert includes Gabriela Lena Frank's stirring Elegia Andina, a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer's mulitcutural heritage. The program opens with Amjad Ali Khan's Samaagam, featuring, Khan, master of the sarod, and his family of acclaimed artists from the Indian classical music tradition.
