Gemma New, winner of the 2021 Solti Conducting Prize, returns to the podium in Symphony Hall. New first dazzled our audiences in Piedmont Park, filling in at the last minute for an ailing colleague. This weekend, she is joined by classical guitar superstar Milos Karadaglic, who returns to the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to perform Joby Talbots concerto Ink Dark Moon, a piece that pays homage to his Balkan heritage. Also on the program, Rachmaninovs Vocalise, written at his beloved country estate Ivanovka, and Sibelius Symphony No. 5, a masterwork born out of World War I, ill health and three hefty revisions. These symphonies of mine are more confessions of faith than are my other works, Sibelius said of his later symphonies, including his Fifth.
