ABOUT PAOLI HOSPITAL AUXILIARY
The Paoli Hospital Auxiliary was founded in 1913 with the mission of “to serve and support Paoli Hospital”. This is accomplished by raising funds through the Auxiliary’s events, recruiting volunteers, various outreach programs, and by promoting Paoli Hospital within the community. The Auxiliary operates as a division of the Paoli Hospital Foundation but maintains its own by-laws, executive council, event chairs, and planning committees. Currently, there are over 110 volunteers from a variety of backgrounds with diverse skills and talents with a common bond and a passion for Paoli Hospital.
Everything the Auxiliary does is focused on supporting Paoli Hospital’s highest-priority needs, engaging the community, and supporting the medical staff and employees. Each year, the fundraising efforts contribute significant capital to Paoli Hospital, which is used to develop programs and purchase technology that enhances patients’ quality of care.
HISTORY OF THE SHOWCASE OF HOMES AT HERSHEY'S MILL
The Showcase of Homes at Hershey’s Mill is a major fund-raising event hosted by the Paoli Hospital Auxiliary. This event helps fulfill our mission of raising funds to support Paoli Hospital in continuing to provide quality healthcare. The first “Spring Home Tour” at Hershey’s Mill was held in 2000. The event is generally held on the second Thursday in May and highlights six homes within Hershey’s Mill Villages, where the attendees leisurely tour the homes.
In 2013, the event became known as “A Showcase of Homes” and featured, in addition to touring homes, a luncheon at Hershey’s Mill Golf Club, Vendor Boutique, and Raffles. This event has been held yearly since its inception in 2000, except for three years when Main Line Health Activities were restricted due to COVID-19.
The Auxiliary has contributed over $10.8 million to Paoli Hospital, including over $300,000 from the proceeds of the Showcase of Homes. This year, the proceeds will benefit the Hospital’s 3 South Inpatient Bed Expansion. Paoli Hospital Auxiliary is a group of dedicated volunteers and is proud to host the 2025 Showcase of Homes at Hershey’s Mill on Thursday, May 8.
INPATIENT ROOM EXPANSION - 3 SOUTH
Paoli Hospital has long been the hospital of choice for many in Chester County. With the continued population growth in our community, especially among older adults, demand for services from Paoli Hospital has been steadily growing over the last decade. The closure of two hospitals in the region in 2021 resulted in a sudden, unplanned influx of new patients at a time when we were still seeing a substantial number of patients suffering from COVID-19.
Now that the pandemic has abated, we see very few patients presenting to the emergency department (ED) or being admitted to the hospital for treatment of COVID-19, so we believe that our current volume of patients is our “new normal.” Compared to pre-pandemic volumes, Paoli Hospital is seeing a 20% increase in annual visits (over 8,000 more patients) to our ED and a 37% increase in average census in our medical, surgical and intensive care units. That equates to just over 50 more patients needing a hospital room each day. Paoli Hospital was not designed to accommodate these elevated patient volumes. As a result, we regularly exceed 100% of the occupancy of our medical, surgical and intensive care units. To do so, we care for admitted patients in temporary “surge” areas such as the ED and holding bays in our Ambulatory Surgery Unit and Interventional Procedure Suite.
We have recruited many more registered nurses, so we are able to provide appropriate care for our patients in these surge areas, but the surge spaces are inadequate, usually with no door, bathroom or television.
When admitted patients are kept in the ED waiting for an inpatient room to become available, the ED team has fewer rooms available to use to care for an increased volume of emergency patients. This results in longer wait times for everyone.
To address the sustained increase in demand, Paoli Hospital will add a new unit, 3 South, with 12 new private patient rooms on the third floor of the main building. With investment from Main Line Health and crucial philanthropic partnerships, 3 South will bring much-needed relief to our patients in both our ED and inpatient areas. Most importantly, this inpatient expansion will enable Paoli Hospital to uphold the high standard of patient care for which we are known.
A PERFECT STORM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF PHILANTHROPY
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in hospitals experiencing increased supply costs, an unprecedented labor shortage and a sharp drop in revenue as elective surgeries, testing and physician office visits were curtailed. Initially, the CARES act funding from the federal government helped to offset some of these financial shortfalls, but that aid has ended. Across the country, hospitals are still experiencing extraordinary financial challenges due to the fixed reimbursement nature of health care and increasing operating costs caused by inflation. Hospital closures are not unique to our community. In 2022 alone, 19 states have experienced hospital closures or bankruptcies.
Paoli Hospital has weathered this storm with the support of our community, prudent fiscal management and shared resources across Main Line Health. Far from reducing services, Paoli Hospital has expanded service lines in critical areas, converted administrative space to inpatient rooms and repurposed storage space for treatment rooms in our ED.
