Celebrating the 25th anniversary of Flamenco Festival NY, we honor Maestro Sabicas, the man who brought flamenco guitar to the world stage from the heart of Manhattan, and who first performed at the Town Hall in 1959. Sabicas arrived in New York in the early 1940s as an exile of the Spanish Civil War. The city would become his creative sanctuary, and for forty years he was the welcoming face for flamenco artists arriving in the US; a friend, a host, and a protector to dancers, singers and guitarists seeking a foothold in a foreign land. This tribute brings together three generations of flamenco guitarists: the virtuosic Gerardo Núñez, the Latin Grammy-winning Antonio Rey, and rising talent Alvaro Martinete. They are joined by the celebrated dancer Olga Pericet, whose bold, elegant performance reimagines flamenco with wit and intensity.
