Fear stalks the villagers of Salem. Some say witchcraft is responsible for strange happenings. But when accusations and paranoia take root, a deadly chain of events unfolds. When everything is at stake, what is the cost of the truth - and who pays the price? WNO Music Director Robert Spano and Artistic Director Francesca Zambello lead Robert Ward's Pulitzer Prize-winning opera The Crucible, based on Arthur Miller's Tony Award® winning play, which tells the story of the 17th-century Salem witch trials and serves as an allegory for the 1950s Red Scare - widespread fear of communism in the United States that led to political oppression and blacklisting. Anchoring the drama is Grammy Award - winning mezzo-soprano J'Nai Bridges as Elizabeth Proctor, who unites with powerhouse American bass-baritone Ryan McKinny as John Proctor.
