When Truth-Telling Gets Complicated: Torah and the Ethics of Lying

Abraham is a pillar of faith and a model of righteousness... but he doesn’t always tell the truth. In this thought-provoking class, Rabbi Michele Faudem guides us through the story of Abram and Sarai’s journey to Egypt, where Abram lies about his relationship to Sarai to protect himself. Is this a moment of clever survival, a moral lapse, or something else entirely?

From this unsettling episode, we expand outward to explore the Jewish approach to truth and deception: when lying is clearly forbidden, when it's permitted, and when it’s anything but straightforward. Drawing on sources throughout our tradition, Rabbi Faudem invites us to wrestle with some of the Torah’s most enduring moral tensions. Together, we’ll ask not only whether honesty is a virtue, but when, why, and for whom it might need to make room for something more complex.

With her signature ability to balance textual depth, moral complexity, and lively discussion, Rabbi Faudem will guide learners through a nuanced exploration of honesty, self-protection, and ethical gray zones anchored in Jewish wisdom.

We strive to ensure access and meaningful participation by all. As such, this program will have closed captioning.
