Lamentation and Loss: Then and Now

As Tisha b’Av approaches, join Steven Chervin for a two-part exploration of Eikhah, the Book of Lamentations, one of Judaism’s most powerful responses to loss, grief, and national tragedy. Written in the aftermath of the destruction of the First Temple, Eikhah gave voice to a shattered people struggling to make sense of catastrophe. Yet its words have continued to resonate across the centuries, helping generations of Jews confront moments of heartbreak, upheaval, and uncertainty.

Together, we will trace how Lamentations has served as a lens through which Jewish communities have remembered and understood later tragedies, from ancient times to the present day. We will also consider how contemporary events, including October 7, are being commemorated through the language of memory and mourning. As we prepare to read Eikhah on Tisha b’Av, we will ask what wisdom, strength, and hope this ancient text can offer as we navigate the challenges of our own time.

Dr. Steven Chervin is a lifelong Jewish educator whose work spans the classroom, the campsite, the sanctuary, and the museum. For 19 years, he taught a wide range of Melton classes at the Atlanta JCC, where he became affectionately known as “Mr. Melton,” reaching more than 1,000 adult learners through his dynamic and deeply personal teaching.

A former day school principal, religious school director, and day camp director, Dr. Chervin has also served as an Israel trip leader and as Director of Jewish Continuity for the Atlanta Jewish Federation. He spent a decade as Director of the Goodman Institute for Adult Jewish Studies at a major synagogue in Atlanta, and taught Jewish studies as an adjunct instructor at Emory University..
